Safact - Anti-Piracy Foundation

Agency: TBWA/Hunt Lascaris
Country: South Africa
Date: 2007

Winner of Best DM idea at D&AD in 2007 is this idea from TBWA/Hunt Lascaris, Johannesburg.

DVD piracy is hurting the film industry in South Africa.

The agency got street vendors to sell ‘pirated’ copies of ‘Tsotse’, the big hit movie of 2005. When the purchaser got home and played it, after three minutes the screen went blank and a title came up saying: Thank you for your donation to help fight DVD piracy.

Not just a self-financing solution but discouraging to all buyers of pirated DVD’s in case the next DVD they buy also turns out to be a waste of money.
